Hockey, rugby meeting, ski hills, biathlon this weekend

Storm

The Storm started a three-game home stand against Fort McMurray with a win.

Four different players scored goals as the Storm beat the Oil Barons 4-1 Thursday night.

Grande Prairie now has 39 points, tied with Lloydminster for third in the North Division, five points back of the MOB.

The Storm will host Fort McMurray again on Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

NWJHL

There are three games in the Northwest Junior Hockey League Friday.

The Wheat Kings are in Beaverlodge, Fairview will be in Peace River, and Dawson Creek travels to Fort St. John.

On Saturday, Dawson Creek will be at the Wheat Kings and Beaverlodge in Peace River.

All those games start at 8 p.m.

Sexsmith is in La Crete for a 7 p.m. start time on Saturday and a 1:30 p.m. face-off on Sunday.

Also on Sunday, Beaverlodge in Fort St. John will start at 3:30.

NPHL

There is one game in the North Peace Hockey League on Friday with Valleyview in Manning.

Saturday, High Prairie is in Valleyview, Manning in Falher and Fort St. John in Fox Creek.

All these games start at 8:30 p.m.

Dawson Creek beat visiting Grande Prairie 2-0 Thursday night.

Wolves

The Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves volleyball teams will visit Concordia University of Edmonton Friday at 6 and 8 p.m. and Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m. in their first matches of 2026.

The women’s game will go first both days. 

The Junior High basketball tournament is set for Friday and Saturday at the NWP gym.

Rugby meeting

Grande Prairie Rugby will hold its annual general meeting on Saturday.

The day starts at 12:30 with a potluck lunch. The meeting will follow.

All members are welcome.

Ski Hills

Nitehawk ski hill is open from 5:30-9:30 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The Tube Zone is open from 5-7 and 7:30 to 9:30 on Friday, noon-2 and 2:30-4:30 Saturday and Sunday.

The 2:30 p.m. session on Saturday is sold out.  

Whispering Pines Ski Hill is open Saturday and Sunday from 10-4. The rental shop and chalet open at 9 a.m.

Spring Lake Ski Hill is open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Little Smoky Ski Area is open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Fairview Ski Hill is open from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Misery Mountain is open Friday from 4-9 p.m., 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Biathlon

Grande Prairie is hosting a Biathlon Alberta race this weekend.

Race #2 in the Calforex Cup is taking place through Sunday at the Wapiti Nordic Ski Centre.

There are both mass start and sprint races.

Start time is 8 a.m. daily.
