Sentencing for accused in Sturgeon Lake death set for March

Alberta Justice says sentencing will take place in March for the accused in a 2023 shooting death at Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation.

Alberta Justice says Vincent Campiou will be sentenced March 25 in Grande Prairie Court of King’s Bench.

He was originally charged with murder, and was to stand trial starting on January 12, but was instead earlier convicted of manslaughter/use of a firearm.

Campiou was charged after the death of 59-year-old Patricia Campiou.

Valleyview RCMP said at the time that they were called out at around 8 p.m. on March 12, 2023, to a report of a shooting at a Sturgeon Lake home.

First responders tried to save Patricia Campiou, but she died of her injuries.

Vincent Campiou was arrested the next day.

Trial dates set for one accused in Sturgeon Lake murder.

Trial dates have been set for one of the three people charged in connection with murder after a 2023 death on Sturgeon Lake Creek Nation.

The judge and jury trial for Sara Dawn Aleisha Kappo is set for November 16-25, 2026, in Grande Prairie Court of King’s Bench.

Two other accused, Teyanna Angel Rae Kappo and Dallas Goodswimmer, are due in Grande Prairie court on February 2.

All three were charged after the death of 36-year-old Aaron Bellcourt.

Valleyview RCMP said at the time that they were called out to a Sturgeon Lake home on November 8, 2023, after reports that a man had been assaulted and had what police called “serious lacerations.”

He later died in hospital.

Trial dates set for one accused in drug arrest

A trial date has been set for one accused in a Grande Prairie drug arrest.

Brock Anthony Gooler of Grande Prairie will have a judge-alone trial on January 14 and 15, 2027, in Grande Prairie Court of King’s Bench.

He was one of two people arrested on October 1, 2023, after Grande Prairie RCMP got a report of an impaired driver.

Police went to a parking lot near 112 Street and 100 Avenue around 1 p.m. that day.

A search of a suspect vehicle turned up drugs that included cocaine, fentanyl and methamphetamine, over $5,700 cash, an airsoft gun, and a knife.

The second accused, Cassandra Ouelette, was given a sentence of one day time served after entering a guilty plea last September in an Edmonton court.

Both Gooler and Ouelette had originally been charged with three counts each of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Jail sentence in stolen property case

Alberta Justice says a Manning man has been given jail time after pleading guilty to theft-related crimes in Grande Prairie court.

Mason Gordon Lane was given a global sentence of 120-days on January 12 in Grande Prairie court, minus 107 days’ credit for pre-trial time spent in custody.

Among the charges he pleaded guilty to were possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of break-in instruments, and mischief damaging property. Two other charges were withdrawn.

Grande Prairie RCMP said at the time that they were called out to a break and enter.

A suspect vehicle was fleeing the scene when police arrived. The vehicle had been stolen out of Spirit River.

The suspects abandoned the vehicle after trying to avoid a tire deflation device and took off on foot.

They were tracked down with help from people living in that same area and Police Dog Services.

Mounties added that they were able to recover “multiple stolen tools.”

The second person charged, Chelsea Lauren Goddard, also of Manning, was given a conditional discharge and six months’ probation after pleading guilty to a charge of mischief, interfering with property, last October.

Short jail sentences for accused who tried to hide in a river

Alberta Justice says a man charged after a foot chase that led to the accused trying to hide in cold river water has been given some jail time.

Jeremy Lori Mitchell pleaded guilty to a count of resisting a peace officer last month in Peace River court. He was given a sentence of 45 days, minus seven days’ credit for time already spent in custody.

Peace Regional RCMP said at the time on September 17, 2025, they located a wanted man in downtown Peace River while on patrol.

The man ran away from police, and a foot chase ensued. He ran through some woods before jumping into the river, eventually getting stranded against a drift pile and a bridge pillar.

The Peace River Fire Department brought a boat out and took police to where the suspect was trying to hide in the water. He was eventually convinced to surrender.

Mitchell also pleaded guilty to charges of obstructing or resisting a peace officer and possession of stolen property in a separate arrest. He was given 30 days on the first count and 120 days plus one year probation on the second, but pre-trial time spent in custody meant he had one day left to serve.

He also has a trial coming up in connection with another arrest in June.
