Hockey, curling, Wolves, ski hills this weekend

Besides the Storm games, Winter Try-It Day and the Winterfest Swim Meet, there are a bunch of other local sports things going this weekend.

NWJHL

There is one game in the Northwest Junior Hockey League Friday, Fort St. John will be in Dawson Creek.

Saturday, Dawson Creek in Sexsmith. This will be the Vipers’ Hockey Fights Cancer Night. Game-worn sweaters will be auctioned, with all the money going to the Maskwa Medical Centre.

Also Saturday, Fort St. John in Fairview and La Crete in Peace River.

All these games will start at 8 p.m.

Sunday, Fairview in Dawson Creek starts at 2 p.m. Peace River in Fort St. John starts at 5:30 p.m.

NPHL

The home team won both of the games played Thursday in the North Peace Hockey League.

Spirit River downed Falher 8-5 while Dawson Creek beat Fort St. John 5-2.

There are two games on Friday, with Grande Prairie in Fort St. John and Fox Creek in Manning.

Saturday, Spirit River in Grande Prairie, Manning in Valleyview and High Prairie in Dawson Creek.

All these games will start at 8:30 p.m.

Curling

The Peace Curling Tour continues this weekend with the Grande Prairie Cash Spiel.

It will be played Friday through Sunday at the Grande Prairie Curling Centre

The Tour Championship takes place in Sexsmith from January 30 to February 1.

Wolves

The Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves volleyball teams will host NAIT Friday at 6 and 8 p.m. and Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m.

In their first games of 2026, the basketball teams will visit NAIT at 6 and 8 p.m. Friday, 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday.

All four sessions will start with the women’s game.

Ski Hills

Nitehawk ski hill is open from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The Tube Zone is open from 5-7 and 7:30 to 9:30 on Friday, noon-2 and 2:30-4:30 Saturday and Sunday.   

Whispering Pines Ski Hill is open Friday through Sunday from 10-4. The rental shop and chalet open at 9 a.m.

Spring Lake Ski Hill is open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Little Smoky Ski Area is open from 10 a.m until 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Fairview Ski Hill is open from 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays, 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.  Saturdays and is now open from noon to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

Misery Mountain is open Friday from 4-9 p.m., 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
