Jan 19, 2026 | 11:32 AM

Grande Prairie Rural RCMP and the Alberta Serious Incident Response team are sharing details of a police incident that took up most of Jan. 12 in Grande Prairie County.

At 6:00 a.m. Rural RCMP attended the 9700 block of 42 Avenue to execute both an arrest warrant and a search warrant related to firearms offences, and a containment area was established as intelligence indicated the suspect was armed.

Over 12 hours, RCMP negotiators made repeated attempts to communicate with the suspect, and police deployed several specialized intervention strategies, during which someone shot at the police on six separate occasions, and at least one officer shot back on the sixth, resulting in no injuries.

According to ASIRT at 6:30 p.m. an officer fired an impact projectile, striking the suspect in the face, leading to the suspect being successfully arrested and taken to hospital for non-firearm-related injuries.

A search revealing a loaded handgun in his waistband, and ASIRT is reporting multipe firearms were recovered.

44-year-old Terence Gordon Shewfelt is facing eight charges:

  • Forcible confinement;
  • Resist arrest;
  • Assault police office with a weapon;
  • Discharge a firearm with intent;
  • Assault with a weapon;
  • Weapons offences (x3).

ASIRT and the RCMP’s internal review process have both been directed to independently investigate the injuries Shewfelt sustained during the incident.
