Provincial government holding nuclear energy town hall in Peace River Wednesday

Jan 20, 2026 | 11:58 AM

The Alberta government is hosting town halls around the province as part of Phase 2 of their Nuclear Energy Engagement and Advisory Panel.

The panel is gathering feedback to figure out how nuclear energy could be integrated into the province’s energy mix to provide reliable baseload power and opportunities for industrial application such as in the oil sands, while reducing emissions.

Phase 1 was between Aug.-Oct. 2025 with online survey responses, stakeholder and Indigenous engagement. The panel gathered initial input to help identify information needs, engagement interest and preferences.

Phase 2 began in Dec. 2025 with webinars, and now in-person engagement sessions are happening until Feb. 2026. The second phase is focusing on engaging with Indigenous communities and organizations to better understand their perspectives on the potential for nuclear energy development and provide additional opportunities for industry and the public to share feedback.

The first town hall will be held in Peace River at the Quality Hotel and Conference Centre (9510 100 St.) on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 6:30 p.m.

Other town halls are planned to take place in Fort McMurray, Bonnyville, Edmonton, and Calgary.

The expert panel will also be holding one-on-one sessions with Indigenous communities, as well as municipal and stakeholder engagement sessions.

The province says the input gathered by the panel will help inform a comprehensive nuclear roadmap and regulatory framework for nuclear energy in Alberta.
