Six RCAF helicopters to fly through Peace Region next week

Jan 22, 2026 | 12:59 PM

The Royal Canadian Air Force has put out a Public Service Announcement as a helicopter squadron will be travelling overhead through the Peace Region.

Six CH-146 Griffon helicopters from the 408 Tactical Helicopter Squadron will fly over the Peace on January 26-28, 2026, as they make their way from Edmonton to participate in multi-national training in Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

The event, Exercise STRIKING BAT, has been designed to prepare military forces for operations in Arctic and sub-Artic environments. It will run from January 28 to February 28, 2026.

The training is said to replicate large-scale combat conditions and involves 1 Wing personnel working alongside the United States Army aviation units. Other international partners participating are Norway, Italy, and Mongolia.

The helicopter squadron will not operate at altitudes lower than 500 feet above the highest obstacle along its route.

Flight activities may make unfamiliar noise and attract the attention of local residents.

The RCAF says flights like these are always meticulously planned and closely monitored to ensure public safety, with operations contingent on weather and flying conditions.
