Non-sporting events part of the ASG 2018

As Grande Prairie gets ready to welcome hundreds of athletes, organizers are putting the final touches on non-sporting events that will also take place during the Alberta Summer Games later this week.

Games Manager Lindsey McNeil says the Grande Prairie Public Library has a collection on display starting Friday.

“We actually reached out to athletes from different zones that are competing in our games and ask that they give us selections of books that they read that changed their perspective and all that stuff.”

A Tipi Village will be set up near the Eastlink Centre Friday and Saturday as a way to recognize and pay tribute to being on Treaty 8 Land.

“Our Tipi Village will have traditional games from Treaty 8, elder storytelling, traditional dance and drumming and there will be an opportunity to purchase some traditional art and crafts as well.”

McNeil adds there will be a Family Carnival Saturday that will tie in with the Grande Prairie International Street Performers Festival that is also taking place at the same time as the games.

“It will have free games and activities, carnival rides, bouncy houses, face painting, live music and we encourage people because of the proximity to the Street Performers festival to check out both of those events at the same time. The Street Performers Festival has been a very big supporter of these games as well, so we want to make sure people check out that event too.”
