Alberta RCMP raising seatbelt fines March 13

Mar 11, 2026 | 6:05 AM

Alberta RCMP is reminding motorists that wearing a seat belt is essential to protect yourself in the event of a collision.

They are reminding motorists that the fine for not complying with occupant restraint laws is rising Friday from $162 to $211.

In 2025, Mounteis say over 2,330 tickets were issued due to seatbelt and seatbelt-related offences.

RCMP say everyone should follow these occupant restraint precautions to help stay safe on the road:

  • Always wear a seatbelt when in a vehicle, and ensure it is securely fastened before the vehicle is in motion.
  • Ensure the lap belt is positioned low across your hips and the shoulder belt is always sitting across the centre of your chest.
  • Do not allow the seatbelt to become twisted. The width of the belt is required to spread the force from a collision across the body.
  • Always use the seatbelts provided on off-road or recreational vehicles.
