Mabel “Nana” Irene Soderstrom (Schamehorn)
February 3rd, 1948 – March 20th, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mabel “Nana” Irene Soderstrom (Schamehorn) on March 20, 2026. Her battle with cancer ended peacefully, surrounded by her family.
Mabel was born on February 3rd, 1948, to Myrtle and Bill Schamehorn of Notikewin, AB. The second daughter of four children; Older sister Norma, and younger brothers Leonard, and Bill. Mabel grew up on the family farm, in Notikewan, AB and worked hard every day. One of her favorite past times on the farm was going out to the marsh to play her accordion and pick blueberries.
In 1965, Mabel married a local manning boy, Ernie Lorencz, and three years later they welcomed their first child, Troy. Mabel was smitten from the very beginning. Then, in 1971, they welcomed their second child, Kimberly, and the family was complete. Mabel was a devoted mother who took immense joy in watching her children grow and in turn seeing them raise families of their own.
Being “Nana” was what Mabel was truly born to be, there was no Nana in the world like Mabel. Her grandchildren – Brittany, Braeden, Nicholas, and Christopher – were the apples of her eye, and brought her joy like no other.
Mabel’s second passion in life was cooking; anything, at any time, for anyone. She spent many of her years creating delicious food for her family and friends. Which then carried over to her various positions cooking in camps all over Alberta and British Columbia. She cherished “the boys” in camp as if they were all her own, never letting anyone go anywhere hungry.
Many also knew Mabel for her wonderful artistic talent. Her artwork – from painted canvases to intricately decorated ostrich eggs- can be found in the homes of her family and close friends. Each piece a reflection of her creativity and spirit.
Mabel is predeceased by her parents Bill and Myrtle, her second husband Wade, her brother Bill, and her daughter Kimberly. She is survived by her common law husband, John. Her son Troy (Lori), her four grandchildren; Brittany (David), Braeden (Jordyn), Nicholas, and Christopher. Her sister Norma (John), her brother Leonard (Eunice), and her sister-in-law Theresa. As well as her many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Mabel’s Celebration of Life with be held at Warrensville Hall, Township Rd 844, Grimshaw, AB on Saturday, May 30, 2026. The celebration will start at 1 p.m., with a luncheon to follow. There will be a private internment with immediate family, Sunday, May 31, at the Notikewin Cemetery in Manning, AB.
