The Grande Prairie Storm forced a decisive Game 7 in the North Final with Whitecourt on Sunday, Apr. 12, thanks to a dominant 5-1 win, while setting a new franchise attendance record.

It was standing room only as Bonnett’s seats 2,939 fans, while over 3,159 fans were recorded for Game 6; the Storm noted that the last time turnout was this high was its 2009/10 season, fresh off its AJHL championship.

The Storm also set a new standard for Junior A hockey across western Canada, recording the largest turnout of any of its four leagues.

So far this playoffs the Storm have welcomed a total of 12,554 fans during it’s five home playoff games, while the next closest team in the AJHL is Drumheller, who saw 5,942 in six games, with Whitecourt in third with 4,602 in six games.

Storm Alumni and current Assistant Coach Jordan McTaggart gave fans credit for their turnout so far, “the energy inside the arena this year has been electric, the crowds have been huge, and the team clearly feeds off of it.”

The Storm will now head down to Whitecourt for Game 7 on Tuesday night, in hopes of playing in front of a sold-out GP crowd in the AJHL final.
