Peace Regional RCMP investigating loan scams

Apr 20, 2026 | 1:01 PM

Peace Regional RCMP are investigating reports of online loan application scams targeting foreign workers.

Mounties say reports are coming in of fraudulent online financial institutions offering loans with unusually low interest rates and fast approvals but ending communications after a victim has paid a fee and provided banking information.

Police say that warning signs of the fraudsters include interest rates significantly lower than those offered by recognized banks, requests to move conversations away from official websites, and difficulty verifying the lender’s physical office.

Police recommend that before applying for a loan online, verify the lender through official regulator registries, be cautious when sharing identification or banking info online, and talk to a trusted financial advisor or family member first.

If you feel you have been a victim of this type of crime, Peace Regional RCMP advises you to save all messages and receipts, contact your bank immediately, and report the matter to your local police.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to contact the Peace Regional RCMP at 780-624-6611 or their local police.

If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8377 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com, or by using the “P3 Tips” app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.
