Reading University’s founders have been nominated for this year’s Zone 1 Alberta School Boards Association Friends of Education Award.

The Grande Prairie Public School Division nominated Linda and Rhonda Side in recognition of their contributions to early literacy and student success.

Since 2008, Reading University has held a three week summer reading program for Grade 3 students, providing literacy interventions at a critical point in their development.

“The leadership of Linda and Rhonda, and the impact of Reading University, exemplify what it means to be true friends of public education,” said Joan Nellis, Board Chair of GPPSD. “Their leadership, vision, and commitment to students have strengthened literacy outcomes across our community and created opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.”

“Early literacy is foundational to long-term success, and through their leadership of Reading University,” said James Robinson, Superintendent of Schools. “Linda and Rhonda have brought educators and community partners together to create a program that consistently strengthens student outcomes”

The winner of the Zone 1 award will be revealed during the ASBA Banquet on May 13 in Peace River.
