Ice jam advisory ended for Peace River

River breakup is almost complete on the Peace River.

The Town of Peace River said in a social media update posted on Sunday, April 26, that most of the ice has cleared through the community and water levels have returned to normal.

Risk of flooding was imminent last week as ice jams in tributaries and breakup in the main river led to elevated water levels near the town.

The Heart River and Smoky River both had ice jams that have since released with no issues reported.

The Ice Jam Advisory by Alberta River Basins has now ended. The thermal breakup of the river is expected to continue throughout the next week, with the ice front retreating steadily downstream.

The Town of Peace River still asks people to use extreme caution when near riverbanks and embankments that were recently submerged, as they can be especially slippery and the river is still moving fast and very cold.
