Hazard reduction burns underway across Alberta

May 3, 2026 | 10:00 AM

With the arrival of spring, Alberta Wildfire crews are conducting hazard reduction burns.

They say wildland fire crews “strategically use fire to remove the buildup of dry, flammable vegetation, which could fuel wildfires,” limiting the fuel for any potential fire in the future.

Alberta Wildfire adds this work also preps the area to be used as a helicopter landing space or fireguard in the future, if needed.

Residents are asked to avoid the area when these burns take place, but traffic on nearby public highways or roads is expected to remain unaffected.

Currently, crews are conducting hazard reduction burning in Pelican Mountain, east of Lesser Slave Lake.
