GPPS deploys drone technology to locate encampments
Multiple encampments in Grande Prairie parks are being assessed or dismantled following a test flight by Grande Prairie Police Service drones.
The GPPS were testing out their drone technology last week by using it to survey portions of Muskoseepi Park and Bear Creek Park for potential encampments.
Of the three sites of interest identified, one was already known to the city’s parks department, a second has been referred for follow-up, and a third was dismantled after being identified as a more permanent encampment.
“This work highlights how tools like drones can support a modern police service by providing better visibility in areas where concerns may otherwise go unnoticed,” says GPPS Superintendent Greg Redl. “It’s about using the right tools to work proactively with our partners and address potential safety risks early.”
