May 7, 2026 | 12:01 PM

A PE teacher from Parkside Montessori is being recognized for his lasting impact on his students and community.

Monty Simo has been named a recipient of the national teaching excellence award in physical and health education.

“Monty has a remarkable ability to connect with every student in a genuine and meaningful way,” said Corrine Shmyruk, principal of Parkside Montessori. “Students feel known, valued, and encouraged in his class. Whether a student is developing confidence, learning a new skill, or simply having a rough day. Monty meets them with kindness, patience, and care. He embodies everything we hope for in an educator.”

Simo is known for his “Not Yet Days,” where students practice skills they want to improve on at their own pace.

“Monty’s influence reaches far beyond physical education,” said James Robinson, superintendent of schools. “He is an incredible leader whose work positively impacts student well-being and success. We are proud to have educators like Monty in our division who truly make a difference in the lives of our students every day.”

The award recognizes kindergarten to grade 12 educators that demonstrate an ability to motivate students to engage in physical and health literacy journeys.
