Lightning leads to more wildfires in the GPFA

May 29, 2026 | 12:00 PM

The wildfire danger level in the Grande Prairie Forest Area remains very high.

Alberta Wildfire says the area is also seeing multiple new blazes, after lightning from a storm yesterday is believed to have struck some trees.

However, crews are responding, and they do not “pose a threat to any communities, at this time.”

With current dry and hot conditions, residents are reminded to use caution when spending time outdoors.

Since the start of this year, the region has only seen 32 wildfires, a significant decrease compared to the last few years.

At this time, a fire advisory remains in effect.

More information regarding the current wildfire situation can be found on the province’s website.
