17-month long fatal hit & run investigation leads to arrest

Jun 1, 2026 | 3:29 PM

Valleyview RCMP have completed an over-year-long investigation into a fatal hit-and-run.

Mounties say on Dec. 21, 2024, at 6:30 a.m. they were called to a location on Highway 43 between Valleyview and Sturgeon Lake and found a deceased person on the edge of the road.

After 17 months and “many witness statements”, twelve RCMP detachments and units, including Western Alberta District General Investigation Section (WAD GIS), were able to identify a suspect and make an arrest.

Thirty-eight-year-old Valleyview resident Preston Goodswimmer was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and failure to stop; he was scheduled to appear before a judge on Monday, June 1.

In the release, WAD GIS Sgt. Angus Kelly thanked the “community members of Sturgeon Lake who helped support this investigation,” as “their assistance was invaluable in getting answers for the family.”
