City wins Provincial Age-Friendly Recognition Award

Jun 2, 2026 | 1:19 PM

The City of Grande Prairie was recognized for its Aging Well Together Initiative yesterday (Monday, June 1) by the province.

The City received the Age-Friendly Recognition Award from local MLAs Nolan Dyck and Ron Wiebe during an event to kick off Seniors’ Week celebrations at the Bowes.

This award highlighted the City’s ongoing Aging Well Together Initiative, which posed the question: What does aging well look like in this community?

Feedback gathered by the Aging Well initiative then led to programs that created more opportunities for older adults, such as Social Prescribing, Yard Gnomes, the Bridging Generations pen-pal program, and transit education sessions.

Mayor Clayton added that it is only thanks to the community that this program can operate so well; Today’s recognition belongs to the entire community, it reflects the voices of seniors who shared their experiences and the many people and organizations working together to make Grande Prairie a place where people can continue aging with confidence and a strong sense of belonging.”

Despite the milestone, the City says its work remains ongoing and the initiative “continues to guide future planning.”
