Football, baseball, rugby, auto racing, lacrosse, and mountain biking on a busy weekend sports schedule

Besides the Summer Luau Beach Volleyball Tournament Saturday and Sunday at the newly expanded South Bear courts, there is a long list of local sports events this weekend:

Football

The Peace Country Cowboys open the Alberta Football League season Saturday on the road against the Calgary Gators.

This will be a rematch of last year’s Alberta Football League final.

Kick-off at 5 p.m.

The Cowboys’ home opener will be played on June 13 against the Cold Lake Fighter Jets.

Baseball

In the Wheatbelt Baseball League, Friday, Grimshaw in Peace River.

Game time will be 7:15 p.m.

On Saturday, Rycroft in Sexsmith starts at 2 p.m.

On Sunday, Manning will visit Sexsmith. Game time is  11 a.m.

The Mets then visit the County Brewers Sunday starting at 3 p.m.

Rugby

Grande Prairie’s rugby teams both have home games on Saturday.

The Sirens women’s team will play Leduc starting at 1 p.m. at Macklin Field.

The Centaurs men’s team will also host Leduc. That game starts at 3 p.m.

Auto Racing

Racing at the Hythe Motor Speedway Saturday and Sunday will include the Canadian Super Trucks and IMCA Modifieds.

Gates open Saturday at 3 p.m. with racing to follow at 5 p.m.

Gates open at 1 p.m. Sunday with racing starting at 3 p.m.

There is free-to-attend mini sprint racing Saturday at 10 a.m. and Sunday at 9 a.m. at the small dirt track.

Lacrosse

The Peace Country Honey Badgers Jr. B lacrosse team will host the Lakeland Heat Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at the Dave Barr Community Centre.

The Honey Badgers are 7-1 so far in their inaugural season.

Mountain Biking

Wapiti Nordic will host the Antler Cup Mountain Bike Race Saturday.

13U and 15U races start at 9:30 a.m., followed by the women’s race at 10:30 and the men’s at 11:30.

The 13U and 15U races will count as qualifiers for the Alberta Summer Games.
