Roundabout Improvements

The County of Grande Prairie says it will be making improvements to the roundabout near Five Mile Hall.

Council approved a tender worth $1,024,452 at its meeting on Monday, June 8.

The work will include improving the space in the centre of the roundabout, upgrading medians and improvements to signage, sightlines, and drainage.

Loan Guarantee

Council also approved having administration go ahead with a public engagement process on a loan guarantee for the Maskwa Medical Centre.

An online survey is open until midnight June 28.

The county says on its website that it is being asked to guarantee up to $5.84 million of a $23.35 million construction loan from ATB.

More on the centre and a link to the survey can be found here.

Hythe Speed Limits

Council approved starting the process to reduce the speed limits in Hythe.

It would go to 30 km/h on all county roads, except the Willow Grove subdivision and industrial area.

Provincial highways would also be exempt.

Policing Priorities

Council asked administration to send community safety priorities to both the Clairmont and Beaverlodge RCMP detachments.

Those priorities include crime reduction, road safety, communication, off-highway vehicles and trespassing for Beaverlodge Mounties.

For the Clairmont detachment, the priorities include relationship building, community engagement, crime prevention and enhanced service delivery.

Both detachments will be asked to add these to their respective Community Priorities Plan for 2026-27.

Grants

Council approved 60 operating assistance grants worth a total of $199,395 to various groups around the county.

The full list of recipients can be found here.

Council also approved grants of up to $5000 each for eight cemeteries.

That includes the Teepee Creek, Elmworth, Hythe, Halcourt, Riverview, St. John’s Lutheran, Valhalla, and Webster ones.

Fire Service Grant

The County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service will be applying to TC Energy for a grant for some new equipment.

If the grant is approved, council has directed administration to get a drone, camera and training for two pilots.

The cost would be $25,000.

This equipment would be used for fire investigations, improving firefighter safety and keeping an eye on wildfires.

Historical Society dissolution

Council approved a $5000 funding request from the Hythe Heritage & Historical Society to finish the group’s dissolution.

Award for CAO

Council recognized and congratulated CAO Joulia Whittleton for getting a 20-year service award from the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators.

The next council meeting is set for June 22.
