Police says status of driver unknown after vehicle goes off Wapiti Bridge

Jun 16, 2026 | 6:28 PM

UPDATE on June 18, 2026 – The RCMP’s Corporal Matthew Howell said to the Canadian Press, that the vehicle remains submerged, and divers haven’t been able to get into the river because the current is too strong.

Howell says police plan to use sonar technology next week in their search.

Clairmont RCMP say that “the status of the driver is unknown” after a vehicle went over the Wapiti Bridge on Highway 40 Tuesday morning (June 16).

Mounties say the report came in just after 9 a.m.

Police say what they call “a large commercial vehicle” is still underwater.

RCMP, firefighters, and search and rescue volunteers were all called in.

One southbound lane on Highway 40 has re-opened.

511 Alberta says the speed limit is down to 60 km/h in that area.

The investigation continues.
