ASIRT investigating death of High Prairie man in RCMP custody

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the death of a High Prairie man while in RCMP custody.

On Sunday, June 14, the man turned himself in to the local RCMP detachment in relation to an outstanding warrant and was arrested without incident.

30 hours later, on Tuesday, June 16, a civilian guard found the man unresponsive in his cell, and while RCMP and paramedics provided emergency medical care, the man died.

The Police Review Commission has directed ASIRT to investigate the incident as a Level 1 matter and to review the autopsy conducted Thursday, June 18.
