Highway 40 southbound bridge over Wapiti River closed

511 Alberta says the Highway 40 southbound bridge over the Wapiti River is closed for a week following damage to its guard railing on Tuesday (June 16).

In the meantime, traffic is being diverted by flag personnel to the northbound bridge, with two-way traffic flowing.

The speed limit has been reduced to 50km/h.

The bridge was damaged after a crane truck went off the road and down into the river on Tuesday morning.

Mounties say the commercial vehicle remains submerged in the river following Tuesday’s incident, and the status of the driver is unknown as the river’s current is too strong for human searches.

Police will use sonar technology to search next week.
