Crop Report

Crop development flourishes thanks to plentiful rainfall

Jun 22, 2026 | 12:16 PM

In the latest Alberta Crop Report dated June 16, AFSC says moisture patterns around the province remain highly variable.

The entire province has been getting timely precipitation to re-up soil moisture reserves and move along crop development.

Central and northern Alberta are experiencing excess rainfall, particularly affecting standing water in low-lying fields and delayed emergence of crops due to cooler temperatures and oversaturated ground. This has led to some fields being left unseeded in the Peace.

Provincially, conditions of major crops are rated 68 per cent good-to-excellent; well above 2025’s 49 per cent and the five-year average of 64 per cent, but below the 10-year-average of 71 per cent.

In the Peace Region, percentages of major crops in the good-to-excellent range are:

  • Spring Wheat – 71.4 per cent
  • Barley – 71.7 per cent
  • Oats – 67.8 per cent
  • Winter Wheat – 15 per cent
  • Fall Rye – 19.8 per cent
  • Canola – 61.7 per cent
  • Dry Peas – 66.6 per cent

The Peace’s crop conditions are 40 per cent better in this report compared to the same time a year ago.

Soil moisture as of June 16 in the Peace declined slightly from the week before, down five per cent to 89 per cent in sub-surface soil moisture good-to-excellent ratings. This is above average compared to the rest of the province.

Most regions in Alberta saw stability in pasture growth in the good-to-excellent category. In the Peace, they went up 13 per cent from the week before to 43 per cent. The Peace is five per cent below the five-year-average for the area. Since rain has driven pasture growth, cattle have been sent out to pasture across the province.

Tame hay growth conditions are rated 12 per cent poor, 40 per cent fair, 38 per cent good, and nine per cent excellent in the Peace.

The next provincial crop report is due out Friday, June 26, 2026.
