RCMP officer faces assault charge after ASIRT investigation

An Alberta RCMP officer is facing alleged assault charges after the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team concluded its over two-year investigation.

ASIRT says they were directed to investigate the Valleyview RCMP after an incident on Nov. 10, 2023, but no further details regarding the assault were provided.

After reviewing all the evidence, ASIRT Executive Director Matthew Block determined the officer should be charged, as they “found reasonable grounds to believe an offence had been committed.”

Constable Ovidiu Haynes was arrested yesterday (Wednesday, June 24) and faces one count of assault with a weapon, with a court date set for Aug. 6.
