Celebration of Metis culture coming to Grande Prairie

Jun 26, 2026 | 12:00 PM

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government says a province-wide tour is coming to Grande Prairie for the first time today (Friday, June 26).

The Swan City stop for the Kitchen Party Tour will start at 7 p.m. at the Muskoseepi Park Amphitheatre.

Organizers say there will be “live music, activities for children and youth, and opportunities for Citizens, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, seniors, and members of the public to come together and celebrate Métis culture.”

The Kitchen Party Tour is called ” a celebration of Metis culture and traditions” and is “guided by the spirit of Âstam Pi Kîyoki, or “Come and Visit.”

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government says in its release announcing the tour stop that “Grande Prairie and the surrounding area had a significant connection to the fur trade.”

“The first Métis settlers in and around Grande Prairie were traders, guides, and hunters for the Hudson’s Bay Company. A distinct Métis community was established at Flying Shot Lake in 1907. The community was part of the broader Métis Nation in Alberta, characterized by a mix of French, English and Cree culture.”

The tour will also stop in Peace River on Saturday and Fort Vermilion on Sunday.
