New fire hydrant installed at Sunrise House

Jul 7, 2026 | 1:21 PM

A new fire hydrant has been installed outside of the Sunrise House emergency youth shelter.

In partnership with Aquatera Utilities and the City of Grande Prairie, the new hydrant will ensure immediate access to water in the event of a fire or other emergency and reflects a shared commitment to support the safety and well-being of vulnerable youth in the region.

“This project demonstrates what can be accomplished when organizations work together to address community needs,” said Vaughn Bend, Chief Executive Officer of Aquatera. “By partnering with the City of Grande Prairie and Sunrise House, we were able to provide important infrastructure that will help support the long-term safety of the youth and staff who rely on this facility every day.”

Sunrise House provides safety for young people experiencing homelessness, family conflict, abuse, and other crises.

“As a 24/7 facility supporting young people through some of the most challenging moments in their lives, ensuring a safe environment is one of our highest priorities,” says Grande Prairie Youth Emergency Shelter Society Executive Director Tanya Wald. “We are grateful to Aquatera Utilities and the City of Grande Prairie for their partnership and commitment to this project. This hydrant not only enhances emergency preparedness at our facility but also demonstrates the value of community collaboration in supporting vulnerable youth. This investment reinforces our shared commitment to building a stronger, safer community and ensuring that youth have access to the resources they need to thrive.”

“The safety and well-being of our community’s youth is a shared responsibility,” said City of Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton. “By working together with Aquatera and Sunrise House, we are strengthening a critical community resource and helping ensure young people have the support and security they deserve.”
