PREA releases position paper on nuclear energy development in Peace Region

A collection of Peace Region municipalities is seeking a leadership role in the advancement of nuclear energy in northwestern Alberta.

The Peace Regional Energy Alliance has released a position paper on the potential advancement and their desire to bridge governments, industries, and communities.

PREA communications lead Jake Pastore says the alliance came together to advocate for economic prosperity.

“We have been dealing with some nuclear proponents that want to locate in the Peace River Region,” says Pastore. “So, we wanted to make sure that we were in a position to advocate for economic prosperity, working towards a mandate for nuclear energy for Northwestern Alberta.”

Pastore says they want people to be fully educated on the energy source.

“We just want people to understand that we do need to have a social license,” he says. “We do need to have people that understand and accept nuclear energy development in Northwestern Alberta. And that includes a whole variety of different aspects that we’ll continue to work on.”

The PREA consists of the County of Northern Lights, the Municipal District of Peace, Northern Sunrise County, the Town of Grimshaw, the Town of Manning, the Town of Peace River, the Village of Berwyn, and the Village of Nampa.

Pastore says their next step will be to wait for the province to develop new policies around nuclear energy.

“We are also working with proponents, including Energy Alberta, as they work through their regulatory process to identify a nuclear energy project for the Peace Region,” he says. “We are also going to take an advocacy role in making sure that we try to establish a nuclear exploration event.”

PREA says their position paper establishes they are prepared to partner and lead the conversation.
