RCMP altering the look of vehicle fleet nationwide

The RCMP is changing up the look of its vehicles for the first time in more than 30 years.

In a release, they note the look is more modern but will also improve visibility.

“This new look prioritizes visibility and public safety,” says Mike Duheme, RCMP Commissioner.

“It ensures our vehicles are instantly recognizable as police – in any community and in any circumstance – while respecting the RCMP’s long-standing identity and proud history serving communities across the country.”

According to the RCMP website, the new design has been developed with distinctive markings to help them stand out from non-police vehicles.

They note that any change to vehicle appearance can raise concerns about impersonation.

If you are ever unsure whether a vehicle or person is a legitimate RCMP police officer:

  • You can call your local RCMP detachment to verify the car number, license plate, or police officer’s name or badge number
  • If you feel unsafe, lock your doors and call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number

The new decaling features white doors on a black base, with graphics that emphasize highly-visible, reflective elements to improve recognition in all conditions – day or night, rural or urban, and across Canada’s varied climates, the RCMP say.

The black and white colour scheme draws inspiration from earlier RCMP police vehicle designs, connecting the modern fleet to the organization’s long history of serving Canadians as the national police force, they add.

Provinces, territories, and municipalities will have the option to include local identifiers based on regional needs.

Rollout is expected later this summer. As the transition occurs, there will be both the existing and new-look vehicles operating side-by-side.
