Hundreds of competitors in Grande Prairie for disc golf championships

Organizers say 400 competitors have come to Grande Prairie from across Canada, along with the US and New Zealand, for the Canadian National championships in disc golf. 

The championships will start today (Friday, July 24) and run through Sunday. 

Local organizing committee chair Dylan Bressey says his group is excited to show off this area’s three courses to the rest of the country. 

“This is the first time Grande Prairie has ever hosted nationals and the first time they’ve been in Alberta since 2001, so we’re really excited to show off not just our community but also our province.” 

Bressey says Grande Prairie first tried to land this event “years ago.” 

“So, it’s been a dream that we’ve had for a long time now.” “Back last September, we got told that we were going to get to host this summer. We immediately recruited about 10 volunteers to be our organizing committee, and they’ve spent the last year raising tens of thousands of dollars and recruiting dozens of volunteers to make this happen.” 

Bressey says 400 competitors are taking part. They are coming from all over Canada. There are also a couple from the US and one from New Zealand. 

Bressey says some will be bringing their families to Grande Prairie with them. 

He adds the Thrill Hill, South Bear and Evergreen Park courses are maintained year-round and are tournament-ready, although some additions have been made. 

“We’ve added some length. We’ve made them look really pretty to roll out the welcoming mat for (all of) these players (from) across Canada.” 

Bressey adds that trail users will still be able to go to Muskoseepi Park. 

“If you’re going to be on a disc golf course, then just please, do keep your eyes open and use some courtesy to not disrupt play, but you’re still welcome to use the parks.” 

If you are so inclined, you’re even welcome to come and spectate and see some of the best talent in this country throw discs hundreds of feet.” 

Bressey says the golfers will also be courteous, calling disc golf “a chill sport.”
