New crop report out, close to 54 per cent still in good or excellent condition

The July 21 crop report from the province and AFSC says crops rated in good to excellent condition were at 53.9 per cent as of that date.  

It was at 54.5 per cent in the July 14 report. 

The breakdown by crop is 57.6 per cent for spring wheat, 56 per cent for barley, 53.3 per cent for oats, 52.6 per cent for dry peas and 51.1 per cent for canola. 

The five-year average for this time of year is 37.5 per cent and the 10-year average is 54.8 per cent. 

The report says recent hot weather “put pressure on soil moisture reserves” and that more rain will be needed to help crops fill. 

Pasture is rated 42 per cent good, 35 per cent fair, 11 per cent excellent, and 13 per cent poor. 

Tame hay is rated 46.2 per cent good, 31.9 per cent fair, 12.1 per cent excellent and 9.7 per cent poor.
