Chan, Galarneau bow out of National Bank Open, evening session rained out

MONTREAL — Two National Bank Open men’s singles quarterfinals were postponed due to weather on Monday.

Play was delayed twice during the day before organizers called off the session shortly after 8 p.m. ET.

The matches, originally scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday., will instead be played Tuesday afternoon beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET.

The 19th-seeded Luciano Darderi of Italy will first take on No. 28 Brandon Nakashima of the United States. That match will be followed by No. 18 seed Arthur Fils of France against No. 20 seed Rafael Jodar of Spain.

The pair of day session matches will lead into the remaining quarterfinal singles matches initially on the schedule.

American Ben Shelton, the No. 5 seed, takes on No. 13 Jakub Mensik of Czechia to open the night session Tuesday. Shelton’s American countryman, Learner Tien, closes out quarterfinal action against Spaniard Daniel Merida.

It was not a total wash for tennis fans on Monday, however.

Canadians Duncan Chan and Alexis Galarneau saw their impressive run in the doubles competition come to an end with a 6-2, 6-4 quarterfinal loss to Croatia’s Mate Pavic and El Salvador’s Marcelo Arevalo.

Pavic and Arevalo, the third seeds in Montreal, converted 88 per cent of total service points.

“They just didn’t miss a volley,” said Chan. “We had good looks on the return every time we got it on our string. I think we hit a solid return low over the net and they just hit it off the court.”

The 2024 French Open champions will face either French tandem Theo Arribage and Albano Olivetti or Russia’s Daniil Medvedev and Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan in the semifinals. That match was suspended due to rain with the Frenchmen up a set.

Chan, from Markham, Ont., and Galarneau, from Laval, Que., did not have a break point chance against their opponents, while giving up three breaks to Pavic and Arevalo on 11 chances.

“I think they got to see our matches from the prior rounds, so they knew what to expect from us,” added Galarneau. “The conditions were a bit different on Centre Court. We felt the wind a bit more and the play was slower. For me, personally, I wasn’t as comfortable on my return game.

“Once they had a chance to hit their volley and finish off the point, they did. That was the biggest difference today. It didn’t allow us to have too many opportunities of our own.”

The Canadian wild cards defeated the team of German star Alex Zverev and Brazil’s Marcelo Melo in the first round before upsetting eighth seeds Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France and Kevin Krawietz of Germany in the second round.
