Camp Tamarack responding to public concerns

Accusations of an unsafe environment have prompted an internal review of Camp Tamarack and RCMP involvement.

In a statement released Monday, Aug. 10, Camp Tamarack’s Board of Directors confirmed they are reviewing the specific matters raised by concerned members of the public, including accusations of an allegedly racist social media post by a staff member and concerns regarding the safety and well-being of campers.

RCMP Cpl. Mathew Howell says the Clairmont RCMP were brought into the matter after a parent became aware of the social media.

“The complaint we got was from the camp because of the post, and one of the parents going on the spot and taking pictures and so on,” says Howell. “There is no safety concerns for the camp with regard to outsiders, but there were also some recommendations made with regard to general safety and addressing concerns of the parents and so on.”

Howell says the RCMP did not find any ground for formal charges at this time.

“If ever more information comes in, if ever there’s more, it will obviously be looked at again. But from this standpoint right now, there’s not enough evidence of either side to do any criminal accusations. At this time there is no evidence to suggest that there are any issues at the camp, with regard to the safety of children.”

To protect the privacy and confidentiality of the people involved, the exact circumstances cannot be publicly discussed, but the Board says they will review the concerns and act where warranted.

The Camp Board is asking anyone with first-hand information or a concern about an experience at Camp Tamarack to reach out as part of their review of relevant record, policies and procedures.
