Province invests $15 million into grants to support family violence programs

Three new funding streams have been created by the provincial government to help strengthen family violence programs.

As a result, the Government of Alberta is investing $15 million into the trio of new grants, and applications are now open for service providers to access funding.

“Family violence has devastating impacts on families, and I want Albertans to know that help is available,” said Searle Turton, Minister of Children and Family Services, in a media release. “Through these grants, we are increasing access to supports that are responsive to the needs of Albertans experiencing family violence wherever they live, while strengthening the organizations doing this important work.”

The funding, which is provided through the renewed Emergency Family Violence Services program, will be distributed across three grant streams to support flexible community-based services, modernize facilities and strengthen regional collaboration among service providers.

“FearIsNotLove is grateful to see the government continue to invest in funding for diverse supports – including prevention – to address family violence as the complex issue that it is,” said Kim Ruse, chief executive officer, FearIsNotLove. “Collaboration and innovation are important in the work we do, and we are pleased to see them prioritized in this round of funding.”

The grant streams are as per the Government of Alberta:

  • $4-million Facility Grant Pilot Program: Provides capital funding to eligible women’s shelters for facility upgrades and maintenance, including roofing, heating and ventilation.
  • $5.8-million one-time Regional Collaboration and Innovation Grant: Supports collaborative projects over two years, helping organizations build partnerships, improve coordination and develop innovative emergency family violence services.
  • $5.1-million Operational Fund: Supports requests for new or increased operational funding, enabling agencies to adapt to changing community needs and strengthen services.

These investments strengthen Alberta’s emergency family violence response and advance Alberta’s 10-year strategy to end gender-based violence.
