Fire crews respond to chimney fire in Sexsmith

Monday afternoon at 2:25 p.m., the Sexsmith Fire Department along with the Clairmont station of the County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service responded to a chimney fire in Sexsmith located near 101A Avenue and 99 Street.

On arrival, crews found smoke in the residence. The blaze was quickly extinguished and was contained to the chimney/pellet stove.

In a press release from the Sexsmith Fire Department, District Chief Dale Widsten stated, “every time you have a fire in a wood burning fireplace pellet stove, it leaves traces of soot and tar, causing creosote to form.”

Widsten added, “wood burning fireplaces, pellet stoves, and their chimneys should be cleaned annually by a certified chimney sweep.”
