Whitecourt RCMP arrest suspects in Aug. 9 assault

Whitecourt RCMP have laid charges against two suspects in connection with an assault on Aug. 9 that left a male victim with serious injuries.

The RCMP’s investigation identified three suspects connected to a series of unreported firearm discharges in the area, and a search warrant was executed on Sept. 4.

As a result, 36-year-old William Desjarlais and 30-year-old Joyelle Kerr have been arrested and face multiple charges, including aggravated assault and unlawful confinement.

Desjarlais is facing a combined 13 charges:

  • Aggravated assault
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Unlawful Confinement
  • Possession of a firearm without a license (x3)
  • Reckless discharge of a firearm
  • Possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Use of a firearm in the commission of an offence
  • Possession of a controlled substance (x2)
  • Possession of body armour without a permit

Desjarlais was to speak to bail Tuesday, Sept. 8. Kerr will appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Whitecourt Sept. 22.

Warrants are being sought for a third individual, and additional charges are expected.
