PREA releases statement supporting nuclear energy MOU

Sep 17, 2026 | 3:38 PM

The Peace Regional Energy Alliance is supporting a memorandum of understanding between Alberta, the Northwest Territories, and Saskatchewan.

The MOU aims to advance collaboration on nuclear energy technologies by establishing a unified framework to share information, evaluate nuclear generation, and explore enhanced regional transmission infrastructure.

PREA considers this announcement a turning point, as they have actively advocated for the Peace Region to be designated the premier location for future provincial nuclear developments.

“This MOU is exactly the kind of forward-thinking, collaborative leadership Western Canada needs to secure our economic and energy future,” said Terry Ungarian, Chair of PREA. “With the Peace River Nuclear Power Project already moving through the federal impact assessment phases, our municipalities are ready to act as a primary corridor for this emerging sector. This aligns perfectly with our recent Position Paper released mid-summer 2026 as we continue to support the Government of Alberta’s ongoing work on a nuclear energy framework.”

The Peace Regional Energy Alliance consists of multiple municipalities and economic partners interested in driving sustainable economic prosperity and energy diversification in northwestern Alberta.
