Alberta moving cancer screening notifications to MyChart as paper letters phase out

Albertans are being encouraged to use MyChart as the province begins moving cancer screening invitations and reminders away from paper mail.

Primary Care Alberta (PCA) says it will phase out mailed notifications where possible starting this fall, with patients instead receiving screening information through MyHealthAlberta’s MyChart platform.

The Alberta Cervical Cancer Screening Program began the transition on Sept. 15, with the Alberta Colorectal Cancer Screening Program and Alberta Breast Cancer Screening Program expected to follow in 2027.

“Albertans increasingly expect to access services and information digitally,” said Justin Wright, minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services.

“Moving cancer screening notifications to MyChart is a practical step that improves access to personal health information, supports participation in life-saving screening programs, and ensures we are delivering services in a more efficient and sustainable way.”

Patients who are not enrolled in MyChart will continue to receive printed letters.

PCA says normal screening results will be available through MyChart or communicated by the patient’s appropriate care provider.

Abnormal test results will be mailed, made available through MyChart or communicated through the patient’s care provider.

Kimberley Simmonds, PCA’s CEO, says the change will give patients another way to keep track of their screening information.

“These changes are designed to make it easier to review messages, alerts and results, better keep track of your screenings and remind you when to book an appointment,” Simmonds said.

“Regular screening is the best way to find cancer early, before symptoms appear and when treatment is likely to be most effective.”

PCA said the move is intended to give Albertans greater access to their health information while reducing the need for paper notifications.

Albertans who are able to use MyChart and have not already signed up are encouraged to create an account through MyHealthAlberta.

People who continue to receive paper letters and are concerned their mailing address may be incorrect can contact Primary and Preventative Health Services at 310-0000, then dial 780-427-1432.

Those who would prefer to update their information by mail or in person can find more information through the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan.

Albertans can also speak with their primary care provider about cancer screening or find additional information through Screening for Life.
