Northwestern Polytechnic has unveiled its new Power Engineering Lab in the Skilled Trades Wing.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Wednesday for the new Cenovus Energy Power Engineering Bench Lab, which will provide students with hands-on learning opportunities in power engineering studies.

NWP CEO and president Dr. Vanessa Sheane says Cenovus Energy contributed $250,000 to develop the new learning space.

“Through our previous relationship we reached out and said, ‘How can we work together to better both organizations?'” Sheane says. “So, right from the start Cenovus and NWP have been building out and enhancing our partnership to get to where we are today.”

Cenovus Director of Community and Indigenous Affairs Trent Zacharias says they are a strong supporter of post-secondary education programs.

“Just really that natural fit between having operations in the area and an excellent post-secondary institution,” Zacharias says. “That had an opportunity to expand and increase those training and education opportunities.”

Zacharias says the space will help meet their future workforce needs in the industry.

“Offerings such as what is being offered at Northwestern Polytechnic,” he says. “Are one of the most important ways to get practical, applicable training that can instantly apply at any one of our sites.”

Sheane says the lab is located directly across from the Spartan Controls Power lab, and students will make use of both spaces.

“It very much is that integral component to the program and the hands-on piece,” she says. “Where they get to do the learning hands-on and see how that impacts in the power lab.”

The ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by NWP staff, Cenovus representatives, members of the provincial and municipal governments, and many of the students that will use the new space going forward.
