Accused in murder found guilty

Alberta Justice says a man charged after a 2023 murder in Atikameg has been found guilty.

Tristan Patrick Kayne Grey of Whitefish First Nation was found guilty of second degree murder October 2 in Peace River Court of King’s Bench.

He was charged after the April 27, 2023, death of 56-year-old Beatrice Laboucan.

High Prairie RCMP said at the time they answered a call about an assault at an Atikameg home, where Laboucan was found dead.

A suspect was arrested at the same home.

Grey is due back in Peace River court on October 26.

Jail sentence for man accused of sexual contact with a minor

Alberta Justice says a Grande Prairie man charged with sexual contact with a minor and sexual assault has been given a six-and-a-half-year jail sentence.

He was found guilty of both charges in Grande Prairie court, but the second charge was stayed. An email to EverythingGP from the Crown prosecutor’s office in Grande Prairie says the Crown asked for the stay because the law says that “where multiple offences arise from the same conduct and share common elements, the law generally permits only one conviction to stand.”

He was arrested in March of 2024 after Grande Prairie RCMP tried to stop a pickup on Highway 43 while they were doing traffic enforcement.

The driver took off. The truck was later found stuck in a snowbank. The driver was charged with impaired driving and identified as the suspect in the sexual charges case.

A court-ordered publication ban prohibits the release of any information that may identify the victim.

Man charged in drug, weapons arrest found not guilty

Alberta Justice says a man charged in a 2023 drugs and weapons arrest has been found not guilty.

Bradley Victor Morency of Peace River was acquitted on a dozen drug and weapons charges in late September in Peace River court.

Two other failure to comply charges were withdrawn.

Morency was arrested on February 3, 2023, after searches at two homes in Peace River.

Police seized over 560 grams of what police believed was cocaine, almost 50 grams of suspected methamphetamine and 10 grams of suspected fentanyl.

They also seized a 12-gauge shotgun and two prohibited handguns that were both loaded.
