In Loving Memory of Harold Brent Hanuse
January 19, 1962 – October 7, 2026
“Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.”
With heavy hearts and deep love, we announce the peaceful passing of Hal Hanuse on October 7, 2026, at the age of 64, surrounded by his loving family, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Hal was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, loyal friend, and a man with a heart as big as his personality. Known for his unmistakable gift of gab, wonderful sense of humour, and generous spirit, Hal had a special way of making friends wherever he went. He loved a good conversation, sharing stories, and bringing laughter to those around him. To know Hal was to know someone you would never forget.
Born on January 19, 1962, Hal grew up in Burnaby, British Columbia, lovingly raised by Gerald and June Bunke, who welcomed him into their family as an infant. As a teenager, he connected with his biological family, including his mother, Ruby Hanuse, forming relationships that became another meaningful part of his life.
Hal dedicated approximately 40 years to his career as a truck driver, spending much of that time with Dairyland before finishing his working years with Pepsi, a company he truly enjoyed. He took pride in his work, valued his coworkers, and made lasting friendships along the way.
Hal spent many wonderful years in Abbotsford with his wife and daughters before moving to Grande Prairie in 2017 to be closer to his children and grandchildren. Family meant everything to him, and nothing brought him greater happiness than being surrounded by those he loved.
Hal enjoyed travelling, especially trips to Las Vegas, and loved sharing laughter and stories with family and friends. He could be stubborn, cheeky, and wonderfully entertaining, but beneath that larger-than-life personality was a truly kind and compassionate man. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, offer support, or give generously to someone in need, never expecting anything in return.
At home, Hal was a devoted and thoughtful partner to his wife, Sherry. He believed in sharing life’s responsibilities and showed his love through countless everyday acts of kindness. His family was his greatest pride and joy, and the love he had for them was evident in everything he did.
Hal leaves behind his beloved wife, Sherry Hanuse; his cherished daughters, Lisa Maguire, Shannon Hanuse, and Sara Hanuse; anis adored grandchildren, River, Alerion, Ruby, and Alenia. He is also survived by his brother, Gary Bunke.
Hal was predeceased by his biological mother, Ruby Hanuse, his brother Terry Bunke, and his sister Kathy Bunke.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the hospital and hospice staff for their exceptional care, kindness, and compassion. A special thank-you is also extended to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the tremendous love, support, and generosity shown to Hal and his family throughout this difficult journey. The family is deeply grateful to all the friends, neighbours, and caregivers who offered comfort and support.
Hal leaves behind a lifetime of treasured memories, countless stories, and a legacy of love, laughter, and generosity. His presence will be deeply missed, but the kindness he shared and the love he gave so freely will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
And in true Hal fashion, we will always remember his familiar words:
“Play nice.”
Rest peacefully, Hal. Forever loved, never forgotten. Until we meet again…
