St. John Paul II Catholic School hold and secure lifted

Oct 16, 2026 | 11:46 AM

The hold and secure at St. John Paul II Catholic School has been lifted, as “a threatening email has been determined not to be credible.”

The Grande Prairie and District Catholic School District says Police have also been able to determine that the threat came from outside of Canada.

In a statement from GPCSD, they thanked the Grande Prairie Police Service for its “prompt, diligent, and professional response.”

“Their careful investigative work, effective execution of safety protocols, and cooperation from our Division’s IT team were instrumental in bringing this situation to a safe and reassuring conclusion.”

At this time, the investigation remains ongoing, and residents may still see some Police in the area for the remainder of the day.

The Grande Prairie Catholic School Division says St. John Paul II Catholic School has been placed under a hold and secure this morning (Friday, Oct. 16).

In an email sent by the division to the Everything GP Newsroom, this is being done due to a situation involving police.

Classes and activities inside the school are continuing as normal, but officers are on site to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Access to and from the school is temporarily paused due to the situation.

The school division says an update will be given when more information becomes available and asks people to avoid the area at this time.
