Mayor Clayton shares statement after Grande Prairie chose to stay in Canada

Oct 20, 2026 | 2:43 PM

Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton shared a statement after the City joined the rest of the province in voting in favour of staying in Canada.

“Albertans have made their voices heard, and here in Grande Prairie, we saw strong voter turnout and decisive support for remaining in Canada. It was encouraging to see residents engaged in a conversation about our province’s future.

Across our region, we see a diversity of opinion, and that is a strength. Albertans have worked for decades to ensure our voices are heard, and while we may not always agree, we share far more than what divides us.

Our communities are connected through shared opportunities, challenges and a commitment to our region’s future. As Mayor, my focus remains on strengthening those relationships and ensuring our collective voice is heard. Unity doesn’t require us to agree on everything. It requires us to respect our differences, recognize what we have in common and keep working together toward a stronger future.”

According to Elections Alberta results, Grande Prairie residents voted heavily in favour of staying a part of Canada (63 per cent); while neighbouring ridings had a higher turnout for a second referendum.

Peace River saw 42 per cent in favour of a second referendum on separation, while Central Peace-Notley had the highest turnout, with 51 per cent in favour of another referendum.
