Alberta Reupublican Party leader resigns

Oct 30, 2026 | 5:15 PM

The same day one separatist leader was given the boot from the United Conservative Party, another faction of Alberta’s separatist movement has taken a hit.

Cameron Davies has announced he is resigning as leader of the Republican Party of Alberta.

And as noted, it was earlier Friday when Premier Danielle Smith shared that separatist lawyer Jeffrey Rath would no longer be welcome to remain a card-carrying UCP member.

“What we have accomplished together is extraordinary. We achieved the highest vote share of any Alberta independence party since the 1980s, raised hundreds of thousands of dollars, and grew our membership to nearly 35,000 Albertans,” Davies said in a statement.

“Countless volunteers and candidates stepped forward to put Alberta first. These accomplishments belong to all of you.”

He also said he’s stepping aside because the movement must always be bigger than any one person.

Summer 2025 is the only time the party has been able to run candidates for office. That was in a trio of provincial by-elections.

Their best performance was in the riding of Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills where they earned 2,705 votes, or about 17.7 per cent. In two Edmonton ridings, they got a combined 358 votes, and somewhere between one and two per cent of the votes.

“Our objective must be clear: Alberta First must become a political reality, not another broken promise,” Davies continued, calling for the following:

  • Full provincial control.
  • Immediate reduction of immigration.
  • An Alberta Pension Plan.
  • Alberta tax collection.
  • An Alberta police force.
  • A binding referendum on independence.

“These objectives will not be achieved through fragmented organizations or settling for the least-worst option. They require unity, determination, and the political will to stand firm,” said Davies.

The party has not indicated who will serve as interim leader.
