City offering free sand for winter traction

Nov 1, 2026 | 6:00 AM

Grande Prairie residents are invited to make use of the free community sandbox this winter.

Located at the City Service Centre, it will provide sand to improve traction and support winter safety.

People can fill up to two five-gallon containers per visit.

Residents wanting to make use of the sand box will need to bring their own shovels and pails.

The sand box operates on a first-come, first-served basis and will be replenished throughout the winter.

It was created after the 2022 Snow and Ice Service Review and was inspired by resident feedback.
