Too cold to clear snow in the County

Jan 11, 2018 | 11:39 AM

County of Grande Prairie Public Works won’t be clearing snow until it warms up a bit.

Operations Manager Clint Diedrich explains that their procedure is to stop non-emergency road maintenance when the weather dips below minus 35 Celsius.

“Working in these frigid temperatures is a safety hazard and also increases the risks of damaging our road maintenance equipment.”

When temperatures go back rises back to minus 35 Celsius or warmer, crews will be back on the streets. The plan is to get back to work Monday, depending on the weather, on the road north of 108 Avenue in Clairmont. Their next steps will be to clear roads in La Glace, and Clairmont south of 108 Avenue including the Whispering Ridge subdivision and Westlake Village. After those are clear, the Wedgewood area will be cleared.

“It takes a day or so to warm back up enough. Sometimes, you have to go back out with a mechanic because the batteries kind of get cold, freeze up, and won’t start. We usually try to leave them for one day regardless of how much it has warmed up.”

The County reminds drivers that the primary and secondary highways are the responsibility of Alberta Transportation.
