Youth Council seeking members for 2019

Oct 26, 2018 | 5:30 AM

Grande Prairie’s Youth Council is seeking members for next year.

Youth Community Development Co-ordinator Jeremy Landon says the Council is seeking members who want to have their voice heard in the City.

“We encourage anybody from any background or community to apply for the Youth Council. We are really looking for a good mix of people with all kinds of stories and all kinds of experiences.”

Landon says the Youth Council plays an important role in the City.

“It’s a voluntary advisory group to City Council. Its job is to highlight what issues are important to youth in the City. They identify what issue they want to focus on. They research that issue and learn about it. Then they communicate why it’s something that they care about and what they would like to see happen about that issue.”

Local youth will have the opportunity to showcase their talents including signing, poetry, and painting at an Open Mic event on November 7 at Tito’s Restaurant. Landon adds this year’s edition will be used differently than in years past.

“We’ve done Open Mic events in the past, usually around celebrations around milestones for the Youth Council. This one is geared towards us recruiting for our 2019 Youth Council year.”

Landon says to be eligible, you must be between the ages of 13-24. The deadline for applications is November 16.
