Opening of the Bear Creek Outdoor Pool pushed back as fees set

Bear Creek Outdoor Pool opening date a “moving target”.

The newly renovated Bear Creek Outdoor Pool has yet to have an official completion and opening date set by the city.

Over the past year, the city has said they were aiming for a July opening. At this point in the construction, they are now looking at somewhere between mid-July and mid-August.

Councillor Chris Thiessen says it is a moving target but he is hopeful it will be ready to go for the August Long weekend.

“I am especially hoping for the August Long weekend for anyone that is sticking around to be able to jump in the pool at Muskoseepi,” said Thiessen.

The cost for swimming was decided on at a city council meeting Monday. Children will cost $4, youth and seniors will be $6, and adults will be $8. For a family, it will $20.

Other council highlights:

– The application process and the authority for Land Use Bylaws were changed during the meeting Monday. The changes were made with the hope that the city can be more efficient.

– Council will look at the development of a business case as well as analysis for a municipal housing authority. The city will look at the best practices of an “Arm’s Length Housing Development”.

– Changes were made to how the city names facilities. Under the new policy, the Community Living Committee will decide on any Naming Rights Agreements longer than a five-year term or in excess of $250,000.

– The Low Income Recreation Access program changes were approved by council. In the past, qualified residents were given a credit to spend. The program will now subsidize the total cost of recreational programming by 75-per cent and issue the remaining 25-per cent cost to the qualified resident. All paperwork will now change over to the Eastlink Centre as well.
