County Enforcement Services busier in the third quarter

County Enforcement Services says some offenses picked up in the third quarter after being down in the first half of the year.

Superintendent of Regional Enforcement Services Stuart Rempel says the area was still emerging from the economic downturn at the beginning of the year.

“Commercial vehicles on the County roads were on the upswing and there’s a significant amount of traffic and violations that we encounter. But, the rest of the statistics were showing somewhat of a downturn. So, coming in and finishing the third quarter of 2017, we see those statistics almost at par from years past.”

Rempel says things like speeding and overloaded vehicles are two of the more common tickets given out.

“The mandate of the Peace Officers is traffic safety and road protection, so when we see an increase on the traffic safety side, we can just see vehicles are moving, the industry is moving again and that brings the statistics back around again.”

He adds officers caught one speeder going 160 in an area where the speed limit is 60 kilometres an hour and another doing 148 km/hr in an 80 zone.

“We put these examples of the high-flyers in just so that we can bring to the public and to Council’s attention some of the things we are encountering in the rural (areas) and throughout the region. Some of those big overloads are road damaging. Some of the high-flyers are extremely dangerous.”
